Day 10 Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Old Town Veneta, trip to the Canary Islands, 22th January 2026


This is my third attempt at this post, one hour that blogger on my phone cannot give back to me. Highly irritating. I am now on my computer, hopefully it will go better. We walked out the ship to this sign 7741Km to Cape Town, unusual and unexpected.


We met him on the way, a tribute to trade with Korea. 


The waterfront has a cycle track, pedestrian walkway and every hundred meters a gym exercise made out of metal. So well done and looked after. Five kilometers later we got to the old town.




We continued down the waterfront towards the old town of Vegueta, which is the historic old town neighborhood of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, established at the end of the 15th century (around 1478). It is considered one of the best-preserved historic centres in the Canary Islands and represents the original site of the Spanish settlement on the island.

Plaza de Santa Ana: The main square, featuring the grand cathedral and important buildings like the Town Hall (Casas Consistoriales). We had a great americano coffee nearby.

Catedral de Santa Ana: A beautiful cathedral with Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements, taking centuries to build.


Casa de Colón (Columbus House): A museum dedicated to Columbus's voyages and the Canaries' link to the Americas, though he never lived there. He stayed there while his ship was getting repaired.




This beautiful church had a metal pulpit and gorgeous stained glass areas. We lit a candle for Vovo and Rita.

The local theatre

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, is a hub for aquaculture, with projects like the controversial plan for the world's first large-scale octopus farm drawing significant attention and opposition, alongside established sea bass farms and ongoing research in sustainable marine farming. The region focuses on high-value species like sea bass and amberjack, using both offshore cages and land-based systems, aiming to balance growing seafood demand with environmental concerns.
