Travelers like us, on smaller cruise ships, the approach to Venice is a magical, multi-stage experience through the Venetian Lagoon, culminating in a spectacular arrival right in the heart of the historic city.
Unlike the large cruise ships, which were banned from the city center in 2021 and must dock at mainland ports like Marghera, your smaller vessel is able to sail directly into the lagoon.
Entering the lagoon: After leaving the Adriatic Sea, your ship enters the shallow, protected Venetian Lagoon. The vessel follows a specific shipping lane, navigating past sandbanks, marshlands, and islands that have sustained life for centuries.
We passed past the outer islands of the lagoon, such as the Lido, which protects Venice from the sea, and the cemetery island of San Michele. The view begins to reveal the city's unique profile, with its iconic domes and bell towers appearing to float on the horizon.
The final leg of our journey took us through the Giudecca Canal, which separates the Dorsoduro district from the Giudecca island. This is the most dramatic part of the approach, offering passengers a stunning, close-up view of the city's iconic landmarks.
