After breakfast we head to Khor Virap Monastery. This was a jail only for royalty. According to the legend, St. Gregory the Illuminator, the Baptist of Armenia, was jailed in the basement for 13 years for the disseminating of Christianity.
Michael visited this pit, 6 metre underground 4x4-meters. I did not go down. Too many people and too hot for me.
Later, King Tradt was going mad, his sister had a vision of St Gregory helping the king so he was released from this pit and prayed with the king. When the king recovered he decided to adopt the new religion and St Gregory was free.
We drive to Noravank Complex situated
on a ledge of a deep winding gorge. Noravank stands amidst the bizarrely shaped, precipitous red cliffs.
Continuing to the Areni Cave complex, we see where in 2008, the earliest shoe in the world was found.
Duration of sightseeing tour: 8-9 hours
Driving distance: 240 km
